Michaela Hall’s partner murdered her five years ago – her father found her body on 1 June 2021.
Michaela called the police to ask for help in 2019, and officers went to the house more than a dozen times. Her partner served prison sentences for a series of assaults on Michaela, and was released just two weeks before he killed her – despite clear signs of escalating danger.
On the night she was killed, a friend heard her screaming and called the police. The officers who turned up at her house knew she was in danger, but never went inside. As they drove off, one of them said they could imagine her “lying there with him covering her mouth”.
The police turned their backs on her. They knew she was at risk, but they walked away.
They could have stopped her murder.
We’re helping Michaela’s family take legal action against the police and probation service for the mistakes that cost her life. We’re exposing the systemic failures that make women invisible in the very systems meant to protect them.
Michaela’s family are fighting for changes in how the police and probation service identify, assess and respond to domestic abuse – changes that could stop other women suffering the same tragedy.
No family should lose someone because the people who should protect them fail to act.
It’s time for the system to give victims of domestic abuse the help they need.
Your donations will help cover the costs of preparing and presenting this case to the High Court, including the cost of barristers’ fees. Due to the mechanisms of legal costs, Michaela’s family would be required to pay the defendants’ costs if they were to lose this case. This sum could be very significant, running into hundreds of thousands of pounds. We have agreed to protect them against this risk and cover these costs if they lose. Without this protection, they would not be able to bring this case.
Ten per cent of the funds raised will be a contribution to the general running costs of Good Law Project. Any surplus will go to develop and support the work we do to resist hate and bring hope.
