Don’t support racism – cancel your subscription
The tragic death of Professor Jason Arday is proof that we need to call time on our vile racist press.
Jason was a young, working-class Black academic at Cambridge who was subjected to weeks of relentless press harassment, even after his resignation as a Professor. His death did not result from the plagiarism allegations, but from the racist press coverage that followed.
In the 22 days before Jason’s death, 249 articles about him were published across 15 national outlets. The Telegraph, The Times, Mail and The Spectator alone published 146.
The Sunday Times published comments referring to the “dishonesty in blackness” and suggested that Jason Arday may have been a specialist in “black grifter chic” – revolting comments that were later quietly deleted.
This is not journalism. It is racialised humiliation for clickbait.
These newspapers profited from a racist pile-on while escaping accountability for its consequences. They profited from coverage of Jason and hounded him to his death.
The newspapers that fuelled racist coverage of Dr Jason Arday should not get your money.
