Fight back against the code of practice

The government’s transphobic statutory guidance is now up and running. But we’re not going to stand still and take it, we’re helping to fight back.

We’re supporting a trans person and a trans-inclusive organisation to challenge the code of practice, focusing on the parts which tell service providers they can no longer be trans inclusive. This means that women’s organisations either have to kick women out, or open up to all men. We think that the guidance is wrong in law and violates people’s human rights. So we’re supporting a challenge.

The fight is uphill, but we’ve challenged transphobic laws before and won. We defended the right of trans young people to make decisions about their health with medical practitioners. We won a landmark case in the High Court establishing that a trans man cannot be denied a gender recognition certificate because he is trying to conceive. And our challenge against the EHRC’s transphobic interim guidance is still ongoing, but that case has already poked massive holes in their approach to the law. They’ve already been forced to scrap some of the worst parts of code – and more still needs to go.

But we can only do this together. The anti-trans movement has billionaires backing it up – we don’t. We have something stronger: people power. If we all join forces, we can and will beat this tidal wave of hate. But we can’t do it without you.
