Global heating is all around us and the government isn’t doing enough – so we’re taking them to court

Good Law Project have taken the next step in our legal challenge against the UK government’s climate framework: filing an application for judicial review in the High Court (PDF). We want the court to declare that Keir Starmer’s plans are so full of holes they’re depriving us all of a right to private and family life.

Alongside our application, we’ve provided evidence from world-leading experts and our claimants, who represent those facing the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis here in the UK. We’ve also given the government a cheatsheet for how the UK can do its bit to keep global warming to 1.5°C.

The UK needs to stop making things worse. So the government need to set a target to reduce fossil fuel production, and deliver on commitments to rule out any new projects.

The UK needs to stop exporting jobs and importing carbon. So they need to stop closing down factories in the UK, only to import high-carbon products from overseas. They need to count our carbon emissions properly, and tackle job losses and poverty here in the UK by creating green jobs.

And the UK needs to put its money where its mouth is. The government have consistently failed to do their fair share on measures adapting to global heating and addressing risks. So they need to scale up funding targets – and meet them.

Despite Starmer’s boasts, the UK isn’t doing nearly enough. The government are failing to grasp vital opportunities for jobs, growth and a better quality of life, and playing into the hands of the far right.

We are now waiting to hear if the High Court will grant permission for this groundbreaking case to be heard. We’ll share further updates as soon as we have them.
